-On July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 was launched by a Saturn-V rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in Merritt Island, Florida. This was the fifth flight of NASA’s Apollo program. The flight included three astronauts: Michael Collins, Neil Armstrong, and Buzz Aldrin. Commander Michael Collins flew the command module (Columbia) in orbit around the moon, while Armstrong and Aldrin landed in the lunar module (Eagle) on the surface of the moon in an area called (Sea of Tranquility). Armstrong’s first step on the moon was broadcast live to a wide audience around the world, at which time Armstrong said his famous phrase: “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”

The stages of the Apollo 11 journey to the moon can be summarized as follows: launch, exit from Earth orbit, arrival in lunar orbit, separation of the lunar module, landing on the moon’s surface, Neil Armstrong’s first step on the moon, installation of an aluminum laser reflector to accurately determine the distance between the moon and the earth using a laser beam sent from ground observatories, installation of a seismometer, collection of 21.7 kg of samples of lunar soil and rocks, one two-and-a-half-hour tour of a distance of 250 meters, launch from the moon’s surface and joining the main module (Columbia) piloted by Collins, launch of the return trip, landing on Earth, where the three astronauts returned to Earth and landed on the water in the Pacific Ocean with the help of parachutes after more than eight days in space. The Apollo program achieved a national goal proposed by President Kennedy in 1961: “This nation must commit itself, before the end of this decade, to achieving the goal of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth.”
