The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers a wide range of study programs in English and German that aim to educate and prepare future leaders, provide the best educational and research opportunities, and help developing countries establish advanced university systems. This organization was established in (1925) and its headquarters are located in the city of (Bonn). It has approximately (900) employees, and its budget in (2019) amounted to approximately (594) million euros. Since its establishment, this organization has financed approximately (2.6) million researchers inside and outside Germany. The organization relies on a wide network of regional offices and information centers in approximately (60) countries around the world.

-The DAAD scholarship is intended for students who wish to complete a full-time study program with mandatory attendance in Germany.
-The applicant for a master’s degree must have obtained a bachelor’s degree within the last six years.
-Have at least two years of professional experience.
-There may be special requirements for the English or German language depending on the requirements of the chosen study program.
-Submit an application to the university where the applicant wishes to complete his/her studies.
-The application must be submitted electronically via the DAAD application portal, where the application includes: personal information about the applicant, contact information, information about previous studies, information about the study programs to be applied for, language skills, professional experience, future career goals.
-Translated academic documents, a motivation letter (handwritten), a research proposal (if required), a letter of recommendation, a European-style CV (handwritten).

At most higher education institutions, the application phase for the winter starting in September/October begins in early May and ends on 15 July. For the summer semester starting in March/April the application period runs from early December to 15 January. are sent out in August/September and in February/March. Rejections are often sent a little later. Private universities may have other deadlines.

A motivation letter of maximum (3) pages must be submitted, explaining the personal and professional reasons for wanting to study in Germany. The motivation letter must include the following: The applicant’s academic background, skills and knowledge. In other words: information about his previous studies (degree, number of semesters…), professional experience, language skills, achievements and awards. The reasons for choosing the study program and university and the applicant’s personal, academic and professional expectations (future goals) must also be written.

DAAD Scholarship Research Proposal

DAAD research proposal

A detailed research proposal (if required) must be prepared, detailing the research project that the applicant intends to work on during the DAAD grant period. This includes: the general scope of the research, the research questions, the research objectives, the scientific contribution of the research (scientific significance), the data collection methods, the anticipated difficulties related to the data collection process, and the proposed references that will be used.

It must be written by a university professor (i.e., a PhD holder), and the letter of recommendation must include the applicant’s academic achievements, personal and academic merits, as well as the relevance of the scholarship to his or her future professional and academic orientations.

Work while studying

The student can work part-time after obtaining approval from the scholarship administration as well as the approval of the academic supervisor or study program coordinator. Also, the work must not conflict with the main objective of the scholarship. Income exceeding (450) euros per month will be deducted from the monthly scholarship salary.

-Monthly salary: (Masters students: 934 euros), (PhD students: 1300 euros).
-Health insurance.
-Travel costs may be covered.
-Free accommodation.
-One-time research allowance.
-The (DAAD) scholarship does not cover tuition fees, and although most German universities do not charge tuition fees (i.e. free), there are study programs and universities that charge fees for students, and here the applicant for any study program must make sure whether this program is free or paid.
-Under certain circumstances, the applicant may benefit from additional benefits (cash allowance and insurance) if he wishes to bring his family if the scholarship period is more than (6) months, These benefits including monthly rent subsidy and monthly allowance for accompanying members of family (about 200 euros child allowance per child; about 275 euros marriage allowance). However, if the scholarship period does not exceed (6) months, the applicant will not receive any additional financial support for his family.
