Biography:
A writer, management thinker, civil engineer, and former Navy veteran, Peters served in the Navy from 1966 to 1970, and later at the Pentagon. He also served as a senior drug abuse advisor at the White House during the Nixon administration from 1973 to 1974. From 1974 to 1981, Peters worked as a management consultant at McKinsey, where he was tasked with the “Superior Company” project, which focused on identifying the distinctive qualities that distinguish a superior company from any other. In 1981, he left the company to become an independent consultant. He believes that excellence should not be limited to the practical aspect, but should extend to the personal aspect, and that successful management must attract smart people and emphasize adherence to work ethics, regardless of the backgrounds and orientations of individuals. He also believes that small things that do not cost a lot of time and money yield great results. He called for activating visits by managers and officials to work sites, and believes that there must be an excellent administrative system and smart individuals to achieve excellence, and his approach is based on education, training, diversity, not fearing chaos and difference, but rather benefiting from it and considering it a natural thing, and focusing on managing that difference and using it to excel and bring about change. In 1990, Peters was referred to in the publications of the British Department of Trade and Industry as one of the best quality teachers in the world, and in 1995, the New York Times referred to Peters as one of the three greatest teachers in the field of business. Currently, his company bearing the same name, “Tom Peters Company”, is located in (Essex) in the United Kingdom.
