Biography:
A Japanese industrial engineer, businessman, and the father of the Toyota Production System (TPS), which later became known as the lean manufacturing philosophy in the United States, Ohno joined the Toyoda Textile Company after graduating in 1932 during the Great Depression. He then moved to Toyota Motor Corporation in 1943, where he worked as a production engineer and had to push production to compete with the American automobile industry, a crucial step for the Toyoda family. While analyzing problems within the Toyota plant, Ohno distinguished between different types of waste, or muda in Japanese. The concept of eliminating or reducing waste later became the core of the Toyota Production System. Ohno was described as a great idea generator and had a distinctive leadership style, as he had the ability to identify the best systems of competitors and then adapt them to the Japanese business and industrial environment, which was considered one of the most important keys to the success of Toyota Motor Corporation’s growth. In 1962, Ohno was appointed as a director for the main factory of Toyota Company, and in 1975 he was appointed as Vice President of Toyota Company, and remained in this position until 1978, to continue after that on the company’s board of directors until his death in 1990.
